George Laird, PhD

George Laird, Phd, PE, is Principal Mechanical Engineer for Applied CAx and Predictive Engineering. Author of over 40 publications on wear, fracture mechanics and finite element analysis, and the “Abrasion-Resistant Cast Iron Handbook.”

Dr. Laird has 16+ years of industrial LS-DYNA / FEMAP / CFD experience, with his doctorate in engineering mechanics (fracture and fatigue). His scientific research focused on structure property relationships for composite materials, ceramics and ferrous/non-ferrous materials.

Other FEA specialization include: seismic analysis of large vessels per ASCE 4-98 and ASME Section VIII, Div. 2 requirements, turbine burst containment, drop-test analysis, composite analysis (stress and thermal) and transient-dynamic stress analysis, elastic-plastic analysis of plastics, elastomers and foam materials and general analysis of a wide-range of consumer, automotive, aviation and medical products. His expertise in LS-DYNA has led to several publications and his short course “LS-DYNA Analysis for Structural Mechanics” is given every year. Since the acquisition of CD-adapco by Siemens PLM Software in early 2016, Dr. Laird has added STAR-CCM to his arsenal of CFD tools.

Pat Barrett LinkedIn picPatrick Barrett is director of CAD-CAM-PLM solutions for Applied CAx, and founder & owner of Sherpa Design. Pat’s many specialties include mechanical product design, rapid prototyping, business development, user training, and getting it done.

Pat has more than 18 years of mechanical consulting and product development experience. Before founding Sherpa Design in 2001, he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University (Go Cougs!) and worked at an east coast engineering services company.

Pat brings a broad array of skills including NX CAD design and mentoring, Solidworks CAD, Pro/Engineer CAD, Teamcenter PLM deployment-customization-upgrading, and multi-axis CNC machining and CAM process development.

At Sherpa Design, Pat guides a 20+ team of skilled engineers, designers and machinists, focusing their efforts on client success, expert services, implementation and analysis. His team prides themselves on pushing CAD systems in their daily work, and get excited when they find a better way of doing things.

Pat’s business philosophy is working with clients to help them “get there” and attain results that matter. Pat was featured in an executive profile from the Portland Business Journal in 2012.

Adrian Jensen 378 square

Adrian Jensen, PE, is a Senior Application Engineer for Applied CAx and a Senior Staff Engineer at Predictive Engineering. With 8+ years of experience, Adrian specializes in all things FEMAP: geometry modeling, meshing, analysis, post processing and programming with the FEMAP API.

Adrian studied mechanical engineering at Oregon State University and puts his background to use at Predictive Engineering as a simulation engineer. His curriculum vitae includes stress, vibration, flow and heat transfer analysis for a variety of applications such as mining equipment, submersibles, electronics, gearboxes/transmissions, wind turbines, large facility HVAC, offshore structures and ASME pressure vessels.

With the experience gained and lessons learned in these real-world applications, Adrian leads the FEMAP and NX Nastran training and tech support team. Working in collaboration with George Laird, Adrian develops and presents training workshops, online seminars, video tutorials and productivity enhancing automation programs for FEMAP. Matt 300pxMatt Martin is Mechanical Design Engineer for Applied CAx and Sherpa Design, handling our NX CAD support and aspects of our Teamcenter services. Matt has been with the team since 2006 and is our go-to expert for CAD support, service, and training.

Matt provides mechanical design services for Sherpa Design and has years of experience working throughout the industry. He's earned a reputation as the "go-to" person to take workflows and techniques to another level. His expertise is sought after by those in the semiconductor, medical, aerospace, tool & die, and virtual reality design industries. As well Matt provides industry guidance on advanced manufacturing, product manufacturing information (PMI), and model based definition (MBD).

Before his current position, Matt served as training coordinator for the Monaco Coach Corporation, and as mechanical lead with the US Navy on the USS Cheyenne.

As his coworker, Randy Ellsworth, puts it: “Matt is curious and brave. These traits enabled him to step from CAD designer in Bend, Oregon to CAD systems expert to Corporate Trainer for Teamcenter Engineering and Unigraphics NX. His drive and determination were instrumental in the design and definition of business processes at Monaco Coach Corporation.”

And engineering manager Blaine Michael says: “Matt is a top-notch design engineer who has been a valuable asset to my group at ESI. Randy EllsworthRandy Ellsworth is one of Applied CAx's Teamcenter Solution Architect and resident Teamcenter experts.

Randy provides strategic consulting, aligning Teamcenter with business practices while generating a road map for businesses and their data.

As well Randy provides comprehensive installation and configuration of Teamcenter Unified, Teamcenter CAD integrations (mainly NX but also NX I-deas), and conducts site and performance evaluations.

His additional Teamcenter services include implementation of advanced concepts like custom Dispatcher solutions, third-party integrations, global multi-site, classic multi-site and fms store and forward.

Elizabeth Davis 02Elizabeth Davis is NX Application Engineer for Applied CAx, focusing on CAM and process improvements. Along with a deep proficiency in NX, Elizabeth is skilled in utilizing NX Open to create timesaving applications for NX. Her technical skills include programming languages (C#, Java, C++, MATLAB), Capital Harness Systems (CHS), and Agile Oracle PLM.

After gaining bachelors in both Physics and Mechanical Engineering, she completed her Master's of Engineering from Portland State University. She worked as a mechatronics engineer at Daimler Trucks North America designing wire routing and packaging of harnesses.

As well, she was a design tools engineer for ESCO, developing tools to streamline the design process and free up engineering time to focus on innovation. In one instance she shortened a process time from one day to ten minutes. She lists her greatest strength as a strong desire to improve processes.

Teamcenter services expert Arden BedellArden Bedell is one of Applied CAx's Teamcenter Architect and resident Teamcenter experts.

Arden has broad-based experience in computer aided engineering, proven team leadership skills, and an understanding of the importance of customer satisfaction. He provides administration, user support, and installation of Siemens NX, Teamcenter UA, and NX I-DEAS.

His additional expertise is in administration and installation of electrical engineering CAE applications, project management, and is proficient in the use of Siemens NX I-DEAS, NX, Teamcenter UA, and SolidWorks.

Hank BoehmerHank Boehmer is NX CAM Application Engineer for Applied CAx and Sherpa Design. Hank focuses on post-processor development, machine simulation, creating custom controller macros, integrated probing routines, and NX CAM support for our software clients.

Hank previously worked at orthopedic medical device manufacturer, Acumed, in the plate cell division. Hank rapidly went from training to CNC programming, helping to transition parts from prototypes to production runs at production capacity. There he developed his CNC programming expertise and participated on teams for lean manufacturing and benchmarking.

At King Cycle Group, Hank was part of the CNC programming team in the manufacturing engineering group. Working heavily with the engineering team on prototyping and new product releases, Hank prepared products for production runs and worked as well with the Cielo Frame Company division. Hank participated in the company’s administration of their CAM software, developing their post-processors in-house. At King Cycle Group, Hank realized his growing interest in software development, and how it can be applied to his manufacturing and engineering background.

Hank attended the intensive 15-week program at Portland Tech Academy, further merging his interests in coding and manufacturing. Working at Applied CAx has given him the opportunity to utilize his software development skills, coupled with his manufacturing and CNC machine programming expertise. He enjoys the challenges of working on the forefront of cutting edge technology, and solving the newest puzzles with NX CAM that arise daily.

Brian Kolb 500pxBrian Kolb EIT, is Staff Engineer at Predictive Engineering and FEMAP support provider for Applied CAx. Brian obtained his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University. After gaining much work experience, he returned to school at Portland State University and obtained his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering focusing on Failure Analysis, Material Science, FEA, and design. Brian has quickly adapted to Predictive Engineering’s FEA environment utilizing FEMAP, NX Nastran, and LS-DYNA and looks forward to expanding his knowledge of client projects.

Brian began his career as a consulting mechanical engineer for four years. As a Consulting Mechanical Engineer he gained exposure to a multitude of skills while working with engineers from many different disciplines to help struggling projects make it to market under budget and meet their design criteria. He has experience in project management, instrumentation, product testing, mechanical testing, failure analysis, non-destructive inspection and testing, and fabrication. His specialty and main focus is performing FEA analysis.

Aaron BlakeAaron Blake is our manufacturing engineer. With 6+ years of experience specializing in all things CAM, CNC, and manufacturing, Aaron helps with our NX CAM support questions. More importantly he manages our 5-axis machining projects at Sherpa Design day in and day out, refining the programming and getting projects to the finish line. One of his favorite work duties is looking at parts and figuring out the best way for them to be manufactured. As he says, "I'm proud to have manufactured parts that have been launched into space as well as parts used to save lives." We recently caught up with Aaron and asked him to share his workspace with us, so check that out for more.

clay hearnClay Hearn, Phd, is Staff Mechanical Engineer at Predictive Engineering with over 15 years experience. Clay gained his initial experience at the the Center for Electromechanics (CEM), a self-funded research organization at the University of Texas at Austin. CEM specializes in applications of pulse power, energy storage, and advanced transportation technologies, and as research engineer, Clay worked on a wide variety of programs. Project highlights from this time include free piston linear compressors, fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles, composite flywheel energy storage, and magnetic bearings.

Prior to joining Predictive Engineering, Clay was Senior Mechanical Engineer for Meggitt - OECO in Milwaukie, OR. OECO provides power generation and power conversion products for aerospace applications. As senior mechanical engineer he was involved in thermal management design and vibration analysis of advanced power conversion products.

In conjunction with his time at CEM, Clay earned his Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. His skills include expertise in structural and thermal FEA utilizing ABAQUS, PATRAN, SolidWorks Simulation, COSMOS/M, as well as CFD analysis utilizing SolidWorks Flow Simulation. Clay looks forward to exploring the capabilities of STAR-CCM+, FEMAP and LS-DYNA.

Jacob Livshits podium 200pxJacob is a third-generation mechanical engineer, specializing in stress and structural analysis. He has more than 15 years of experience in finite element analysis of structures, mostly airborne, and in his career works as an individual specialist, providing complete technical solutions with little or no external support.

For the last 5 years he has worked at an Israeli SPLM reseller/sole representative, championing Siemens PLM’s ever increasing portfolio of engineering simulation software for the complete support cycle, including pre/post sale support and training.

Among the disciplines under his direction are Siemens FEA tools such as NX CAE and Femap, CFD and thermal analysis tools from MAYA HTT, composite design and manufacturing software (Fibersim) and the recent SPLM acquisition of LMS software, including Virtual .Lab tools, AMESIM for system simulation and testing solutions.

As an FEA specialist he provides engineering services for customers, in a diverse scope of solutions starting from basic structural analysis (static and dynamic) through advanced nonlinear requirements, CFD, thermal and other requirements. Through his interactions with his diverse customer base, he has knowledge and experience dealing with automotive, aerospace, military, industrial, electronics and other fields.
