Pat Barrett LinkedIn picPatrick Barrett is director of CAD-CAM-PLM solutions for Applied CAx, and founder & owner of Sherpa Design. Pat’s many specialties include mechanical product design, rapid prototyping, business development, user training, and getting it done.

Pat has more than 18 years of mechanical consulting and product development experience. Before founding Sherpa Design in 2001, he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University (Go Cougs!) and worked at an east coast engineering services company.

Pat brings a broad array of skills including NX CAD design and mentoring, Solidworks CAD, Pro/Engineer CAD, Teamcenter PLM deployment-customization-upgrading, and multi-axis CNC machining and CAM process development.

At Sherpa Design, Pat guides a 20+ team of skilled engineers, designers and machinists, focusing their efforts on client success, expert services, implementation and analysis. His team prides themselves on pushing CAD systems in their daily work, and get excited when they find a better way of doing things.

Pat’s business philosophy is working with clients to help them “get there” and attain results that matter. Pat was featured in an executive profile from the Portland Business Journal in 2012.

George Laird, PhD

George Laird, Phd, PE, is Principal Mechanical Engineer for Applied CAx and Predictive Engineering. Author of over 40 publications on wear, fracture mechanics and finite element analysis, and the “Abrasion-Resistant Cast Iron Handbook.”

Dr. Laird has 16+ years of industrial LS-DYNA / Femap / CFD experience, with his doctorate in engineering mechanics (fracture and fatigue). His scientific research focused on structure property relationships for composite materials, ceramics and ferrous/non-ferrous materials.

Other FEA specialization include: seismic analysis of large vessels per ASCE 4-98 and ASME Section VIII, Div. 2 requirements, turbine burst containment, drop-test analysis, composite analysis (stress and thermal) and transient-dynamic stress analysis, elastic-plastic analysis of plastics, elastomers, and foam materials and general analysis of a wide range of consumer, automotive, aviation and medical products. His expertise in LS-DYNA has led to several publications and his short course “LS-DYNA Analysis for Structural Mechanics” is given every year. Since the acquisition of CD-adapco by Siemens PLM Software in early 2016, Dr. Laird has added STAR-CCM to his arsenal of CFD tools.

His team of engineers at Predictive Engineering bring together expertise on materials, mechanics, and a deep understanding of structures whether under fluid or thermal loading (CFD consulting services) or due to impact or crash (LS-DYNA consulting services) or general FEA for vibration, seismic or stress (FEA consulting services) to help their clients build better structures.

Our CAD-CAM-PLM Technical Account ManagerTaylor Saul is our Director of Sales. His primary focus is on PLM development & implementation with our Teamcenter customers. Taylor has worked with multiple Aerospace and Defense companies to align Teamcenter with their program needs. Taylor has also worked with Tier-1 international automotive suppliers as well as international engineer-to-order manufacturers.

In addition to Teamcenter, Taylor has participated in and led multiple onsite audits of manufacturing processes to improve workflows, best practices, standardization, and modern use of NX.

Adrian Jensen 378 square

Adrian Jensen, PE, is Senior Application Engineer for Applied CAx and Director of Engineering at Predictive Engineering. With 10+ years of experience, Adrian specializes in all things Simcenter Femap: geometry modeling, meshing, analysis, post-processing, and programming with the Femap API.

Adrian studied mechanical engineering at Oregon State University and puts his background to use at Predictive Engineering as a simulation engineer. His curriculum vitae includes stress, vibration, flow, and heat transfer analysis for a variety of applications such as mining equipment, submersibles, electronics, gearboxes/transmissions, wind turbines, large facility HVAC, offshore structures, and ASME pressure vessels.

With the experience gained and lessons learned in these real-world applications, Adrian leads the FEMAP and NX Nastran training and tech support team. Working in collaboration with George Laird, Adrian develops and presents training workshops, online seminars, video tutorials, and productivity enhancing automation programs for Femap. Randy EllsworthRandy Ellsworth is one of Applied CAx's Teamcenter Solution Architect and resident Teamcenter experts.

Randy provides strategic consulting, aligning Teamcenter with business needs to generate an architecture, landscape and road map. As well, Randy provides comprehensive installation and configuration of Teamcenter, Teamcenter CAD integrations (mainly NX but also for SolidWorks and Creo), and conducts site assessments and performance evaluations.

His additional Teamcenter services include implementation of advanced concepts like custom Dispatcher solutions, third-party integrations, global multi-site, classic multi-site and fms store and forward.

Teamcenter services expert Arden BedellArden Bedell is one of Applied CAx's Teamcenter Architect and resident Teamcenter experts. Arden provides strategic consulting, aligning Teamcenter with business practices to control access, align workflows and define their data schema. Arden has broad-based experience in computer aided engineering, proven team leadership skills, and an understanding of the importance of customer satisfaction. He provides administration, user support, and installation of Teamcenter, Teamcenter Visualization and CAD integrations.

His additional expertise is in administration and installation of electrical engineering CAE applications, project management, and is proficient in the use of Siemens NX I-DEAS, NX, Teamcenter UA, and SolidWorks.

Our Senior Teamcenter Solutions ArchitectEdward Tifft is a Senior Teamcenter Solutions Architect. He has over 20 years of experience with PLM, and has been focused on lead requirements gathering, design, and deployment. He has acted on both large and small teams, primarily in leadership roles with teams across the globe (USA, Canada, India, Europe, Australia). He is a certified Agile SCRUM master. The majority of his time has been in client-facing roles that require a strong understanding of their business processes in order to address critical gaps or inefficiencies through system or process design.

His primary PLM experience has been with Siemens Teamcenter. He has exposure with Dassault Systemes Enovia and PTC Windchill, and holds active DoD secret clearance.


Jamie GriffisJamie Griffis is part of our growing PLM team, focusing on Teamcenter implementations and upgrades, data migrations, and CAD Integrations (mainly SolidEdge but also SolidWorks). She is deeply familiar with infrastructure architecture for new Teamcenter implementations and CAD integrations. She was CAD manager for 8+ years implementing and managing 2D/3D CAD and Teamcenter in multiple international sites and migrating all legacy engineering data to a Teamcenter database.

In addition, she has implemented upgrades and updates of Teamcenter, Solid Edge, and AutoCAD Mechanical while providing user support and troubleshooting, writing procedures, establishing workflows, as well as process and conventions for design, drafting, and data management. She oversaw the training of engineering, document control, project management, and production control departments on Teamcenter and Solid Edge; control of standard part creation and documentation; and control of CAD operation manuals and documentation.

Don KnabDon Knab is an experienced PLM professional with extensive experience in strategic planning, capital projects and mission critical applications within the manufacturing industry. 

He brings expertise in engineering processes for manufacturing, product design, and development. Experienced in translating Voice of Customer into Functional and Technical Specifications, Don is adept at leading multi-disciplinary teams, training, mentoring, and cross functional team building. 

Bryce CoppleBryce Copple is a Teamcenter Application Engineer at Applied CAx. After acquiring his Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State, he worked at Mentor Graphics (now a Siemens business known as Siemens EDA) where he helped support the PADS and Xpedition products.

From there he transitioned to working in the Siemens channel as an Application Engineer supporting Teamcenter, where he works as an Administrator for (and training users on) the software. With a background focus on customer service, he's also aided in both marketing and sales efforts in Teamcenter.

Kevin Hlas Kevin Hlas is our engineering services delivery manager, drawing on 15+ years of industry experience to guide product development projects from concept to reality. He manages the needed resources and project plans to meet customer requirements. Kevin brings a passion for cross-functional collaboration and in-depth knowledge of consumer electronics, acoustic systems, castings, lifeproofing products, and domestic as well as Chinese manufacturing processes.

Matt 300pxMatt Martin is Mechanical Design Engineer for Applied CAx and Sherpa Design, handling our NX CAD support and aspects of our Teamcenter services. Matt has been with the team since 2006 and is our go-to expert for CAD support, service, and training.

Matt provides mechanical design services for Sherpa Design and has years of experience working throughout the industry. He's earned a reputation as the "go-to" person to take workflows and techniques to another level. His expertise is sought after by those in the semiconductor, medical, aerospace, tool & die, and virtual reality design industries. In addition, Matt provides industry guidance on advanced manufacturing, product manufacturing information (PMI), and model-based definition (MBD).

Before his current position, Matt served as training coordinator for the Monaco Coach Corporation, and as mechanical lead with the US Navy on the USS Cheyenne.

As his coworker, Randy Ellsworth, puts it: “Matt is curious and brave. These traits enabled him to step from CAD designer in Bend, Oregon to CAD systems expert to Corporate Trainer for Teamcenter Engineering and Unigraphics NX. His drive and determination were instrumental in the design and definition of business processes at Monaco Coach Corporation.”

And engineering manager Blaine Michael says: “Matt is a top-notch design engineer who has been a valuable asset to my group at ESI. He is an expert CAD user and has been tremendously helpful to my team as we recently switched from IDEAs to NX. He is very creative and produces large volumes of innovative designs under very tight time constraints. His thorough knowledge of many manufacturing methods helps him complete his design work and build prototypes with very little need for design iterations."

Aaron BlakeAaron Blake is our Digital Manufacturing Application Specialist. With 10+ years of experience specializing in all things CAM, CNC, and manufacturing, Aaron helps with our NX CAM support questions. More importantly, he manages our 5-axis machining projects at Sherpa Design day in and day out, refining the programming and getting projects to the finish line.

One of his favorite work duties is looking at parts and figuring out the best way for them to be manufactured. As he says, "I'm proud to have manufactured parts that have been launched into space as well as parts used to save lives." We recently caught up with Aaron and asked him to share his workspace with us, so check that out for more.

Elizabeth Davis 02Elizabeth Davis is NX Application Engineer for Applied CAx, focusing on CAM and process improvements. Along with a deep proficiency in NX, Elizabeth is skilled in utilizing NX Open to create time-saving applications for NX. Her technical skills include programming languages (C#, Java, C++, MATLAB), Capital Harness Systems (CHS), and Agile Oracle PLM.

After gaining bachelors in both Physics and Mechanical Engineering, she completed her Master's of Engineering from Portland State University. She worked as a mechatronics engineer at Daimler Trucks North America designing wire routing and packaging of harnesses.

As well, she was a design tools engineer for ESCO, developing tools to streamline the design process, and free up engineering time to focus on innovation. In one instance she shortened a process time from one day to ten minutes. She lists her greatest strength as a strong desire to improve processes.

Devin CroswellDevin Croswell is a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for Applied CAx and Sherpa Design and conducts almost all of our current NX CAD training courses. Devin has been with the team since 2005 and is an expert on all things NX CAD.

Devin provides mechanical design and engineering services for Sherpa Design, and while NX is his primary (and favorite) CAD package to work in, he is also proficient in both SolidWorks and Creo. He brings years of experience in many engineering fields such as product design, aerospace, castings as well as sheet metal and surfacing; all of which gets applied to his development and approach to using and teaching the wide world of tools and applications available in NX.

One of his favorite current work duties is exploring various tools and pathways in NX to get the best and most efficient result for a given task.

Matt Reynolds v2Matt Reynolds is one of our NX CAM applications engineers. His focuses and specialties are in CAM programming, hardware prototyping, NX CAM support, and manufacturing in general. Matt earned his Bachelors of Engineering with a mechanical design concentration from Dartmouth College, where he spent his senior project building snowboard binding prototypes. During his time as a student, Matt worked at the Thayer School Machine Shop, cultivating a healthy appreciation for machining and thoughtful design.

After college, Matt worked as a process and mechanical engineer at Plethora, helping to develop custom CAM software and a manufacturing process to greatly reduce costs for prototype, low-volume machining. Responsibilities ranged from programming and operating CNC mills and CMMs to working with software engineers to develop tablet PC interfaces for stations around the factory. Beyond Plethora, Matt worked as a mechanical designer at Gener8, a mechanical design and manufacturing consulting group with a focus on medical devices and in-house manufacturing.

Matt’s current focus is learning the ins and outs of NX and NX CAM. His greatest strength is his ability to adapt his experiences to understand others; he hopes that by having experience in CAM software development, mechanical design, and manufacturing engineering, he’ll be able to effectively address any challenge at Applied CAX.

Connor ShimamotoConnor Shimamoto is an Additive Manufacturing Application Specialist at Sherpa Design. His specialties include: design for additive manufacturing (DFAM), reverse engineering, and small batch manufacturing. He is fluent in design for additive manufacturing in NX, Solidworks, Grasshopper, Carbon Design Engine, and Keyshot. Connor is known for pushing the boundaries of CAD tools and developing multi-software workflows.

Connor studied Product Design at the University of Oregon where he worked as a coordinator for a regional design conference and mechanical designer for the metrology machine shop. His first exposure to additive manufacturing was at CON2R as a product design intern. The role included designing SLA printed parts for automotive instruments and developing automated football training equipment. His current exploration is using NX and Grasshopper to improve the industrial design of printed lattices.

Like many on our team, Connor is an avid cyclist; he's known for designing and creating custom 3D printed parts and accessories for his and his coworker's bikes.

clay hearnClay Hearn, Phd, is Staff Mechanical Engineer at Applied CAx and Predictive Engineering with over 15 years of experience. Clay is our resident CFD expert and gained his initial experience at the Center for Electromechanics (CEM), a self-funded research organization at the University of Texas at Austin. CEM specializes in applications of pulse power, energy storage, and advanced transportation technologies, and as research engineer, Clay worked on a wide variety of programs. Project highlights from this time include free piston linear compressors, fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles, composite flywheel energy storage, and magnetic bearings.

Prior to joining Predictive Engineering, Clay was Senior Mechanical Engineer for Meggitt - OECO in Milwaukie, OR. OECO provides power generation and power conversion products for aerospace applications. As senior mechanical engineer he was involved in thermal management design and vibration analysis of advanced power conversion products.

In conjunction with his time at CEM, Clay earned his Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. His skills include expertise in structural and thermal FEA utilizing ABAQUS, PATRAN, SolidWorks Simulation, COSMOS/M, as well as CFD analysis utilizing SolidWorks Flow Simulation. Clay looks forward to exploring the capabilities of STAR-CCM+, FEMAP and LS-DYNA.

Nathan AndersonNathan Anderson, PE, is a Staff Engineer at Predictive Engineering with 8 years of experience. Starting his engineering career as a design engineer for a large equipment manufacturer, he quickly gravitated toward simulation and analysis to solve his engineering challenges. After a couple of years as a design engineer, he joined our team and made the switch to a simulation engineer.

With his background in industrial equipment, he specializes in stress, vibration and fatigue analysis, as well as design optimization, of large welded structures and industrial equipment such as forestry equipment, logging equipment, lifting hoists, electronics, pressure vessels and off-highway machines.

Nathan is our Simcenter 3D expert, if you call in needing help with NX Advanced Simulation, you will most likely speak with him. He also dabbles in programming, using code to improve productivity whenever possible. With either the FEMAP API or the .net framework he can help you develop custom automation of Simcenter or NX CAE or even help you develop a standalone application.


Jacob Livshits podium 200pxJacob is a third-generation mechanical engineer, specializing in stress and structural analysis. He has more than 15 years of experience in finite element analysis of structures, mostly airborne, and in his career works as an individual specialist, providing complete technical solutions with little or no external support.

For the last 6+ years he has worked at an Israeli SPLM reseller/sole representative, championing Siemens PLM’s ever increasing portfolio of engineering simulation software, which has culminated in the creation of Simcenter 3D.

Among the disciplines under his direction are Siemens FEA tools such as NX CAE and Femap, CFD and thermal analysis tools from MAYA HTT, composite design and manufacturing software (Fibersim) and the recent SPLM acquisition of LMS software, including Virtual .Lab tools, AMESIM for system simulation and testing solutions.

As an FEA specialist he provides engineering services for customers, in a diverse scope of solutions starting from basic structural analysis (static and dynamic) through advanced nonlinear requirements, CFD, thermal and other requirements. Through his interactions with his diverse customer base, he has knowledge and experience dealing with automotive, aerospace, military, industrial, electronics and other fields.

Nate GinztonNate Ginzton is Senior Mechanical Engineer for Applied CAx and Sherpa Design. Trained at Stanford and the University of Washington, Nate is a hands‐on engineer with experience in electronics packaging, machine design, composites and a wide variety of manufacturing processes. Comfortable at every stage of product development, from brainstorming and detailed design through drafting and lifecycle testing.

He is fluent in computer‐aided design, able to create high‐quality surfaces of complex geometry and intelligently manage large assemblies, yet equally likely to build a quick prototype to verify a concept.
