Case study: How Rune Aero is launching its operations with Siemens software

February 19, 2025

Since its founding in 2023, Rune Aero has maintained its mission of crafting purpose-built, sustainable, and autonomous vehicles for regional air cargo transportation. As an early-stage startup, Rune Aero is completing its early engineering processes, which includes finding an advanced software package to handle its growing business operations.

The software requirements

Rune Aero prioritized a few key requirements when evaluating digital tools.

“We rely heavily on digital simulation and rapid iteration in the early stages. We also needed a solution that could scale with our future needs,” Rune Aero Co-Founder Nadine Auda said.

Another critical factor was Rune Aero’s collaboration with partners who use a wide variety of digital tools in their workflows. This diversity made it essential to find a solution capable of streamlining the production process and bridging the gap between different systems.

Finding Siemens tools and Applied CAx

Rune Aero chose Siemens solutions to meet all its operational requirements.

“NX has capabilities to import, export, and work seamlessly in early stages in the mix environment,” Auda said. “This has helped us tremendously to work as an integrated team.”

In addition to adopting Siemens tools, Rune Aero found an invaluable resource—Applied CAx.

Applied CAx guided the company through the process of evaluating multiple offerings, which ultimately helped Rune Aero to select the solution that best fit its needs. Applied CAx also assisted with setting up NX and Simcenter, which “allowed us to have distributed teamwork within the same licensing framework,” Auda said.

As part of this transformation, Rune Aero implemented a cloud-based license server, which Applied CAx recommended, and it significantly enhanced daily functions.

“This has worked out much better over the months as we have added multiple remote members to the team,” Auda said. “The flexibility of pulling the license and adding additional licenses has been of great benefit to the team working multiple time zones.”

The future of Rune Aero

Looking ahead, Rune Aero plans to explore more capabilities of Siemens tools like Teamcenter. In addition, the company is currently integrating next-gen design and optimization workflow using AI-augmented 3D modeling and visualization of the Altair suite of products. The company also looks forward to integrating Altair with Siemens software to further streamline its digital thread vision.
