Daimler Trucks has plans for a new durability test track on 87 acres near the Madras Airport. The land was leased to the company in May, when the Madras City Council approved the deal.
The project “would not just transfer jobs but create new jobs for Madras,” City Administrator Gus Burril said at the May 26 council session, according to the minutes. “Daimler is able to bring their Portland-based engineers to Central Oregon much more economically and conveniently than elsewhere.”
Daimler also liked the climate and property values in Madras, Burril said. He told the councilors that the Federal Aviation Administration has indicated the proposed expansion is a conditional use, according to the meeting minutes. Daimler already uses a part-time test track on airport property. The expansion would create a full-time facility, Burril said.
