Daimler Trucks tests automated rig in Nevada

May 06, 2015

The Applied CAx partner – with its headquarters on Portland’s Swan Island – held the demonstration to show off its innovation prowess. Developed by engineers at DTNA, it promises to unlock autonomous vehicle advancements that reduce accidents, improve fuel consumption, cut highway congestion, and safeguard the environment.

The truck was affixed with a new type of Nevada license plate, created specifically for automated vehicles. With a human driver behind the wheel, the truck is not yet operating independently. But industry and state officials hope to see the day that long-haul delivery runs, common in this area of the Nevada-Arizona desert, can be done at least semi-independently by automated trucks.

As reported by Oregonlive.com:

That’s also why the company has no intention of ditching drivers. Instead, in this new autonomous world, the driver would be more of an on-board logistics manager.

Technology companies and consumer car makers — Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz included — have been toying for years with making and selling autonomous cars with some technology already appearing in some cars today, including blind spot warnings, automatic parallel parking and braking assist.

Congratulations to Daimler Trucks from all of us at Applied CAx. Read on for more details from DTNA on the Freightliner Inspiration Truck.
