For more than 30 years, Flyer Defense has been a leader in designing and manufacturing all-terrain wheeled platforms trusted by U.S. special operations forces and global allies. To strengthen how it manages product data and engineering change, Flyer Defense partnered with Applied CAx for an audit of its Teamcenter environment.
Rising complexity in vehicle systems
“As vehicle systems become more complex, the ability to manage change also becomes more complex,” Nic Frey, director of engineering at Flyer Defense, said.
The company’s product line is designed in Siemens NX and managed in Teamcenter, but as a smaller organization, leveraging the full capabilities of these tools was daunting.
Optimizing Teamcenter with Applied CAx
Applied CAx provided an audit and a roadmap “honed with industry best practices” to optimize Flyer Defense’s NX and Teamcenter setup, Frey said.
“Applied came in with some settings that really had an immediate impact on our ability to model large assemblies and really opened the world for us as far as NX capabilities,” Frey said.
With Applied CAx’s guidance, Flyer Defense unlocked the full potential of Teamcenter. From change management workflows to collaborative markups, the system became a single source of truth for teams across the company.
“This now allows us to look at total impacts—not just in the CAD itself but in the supporting documentation, work instructions, manufacturing bill of materials, and engineering bill of materials,” Frey said.
Driving continuous improvement
The success of this partnership has positioned Flyer Defense to expand its digital capabilities further. The company is exploring additional features, including Polarion, Capital, and Check-Mate, to further strengthen its engineering and production processes.
“Bringing on a partner like Applied that has the knowledge and experience with Teamcenter is an invaluable decision,” Frey said.
With a stronger digital foundation, Flyer Defense continues to modernize its platforms and ensure its vehicles meet the demands of the world’s toughest environments.
