How AI is accelerating the evolution of CAD

The next stage in CAD evolution

NX has long been known for its depth of capabilities, but George says the real change now is the addition of intelligence. “We delivered our first AI-driven algorithm almost six years ago,” he said. “Today, we have a dozen [or more] commands in NX…to reduce clicks and allow users to focus on what they’re working on.”

The newest release, NX Copilot, assists engineers with searching documentation, but eventually will offer design guidance and generative input. George believes AI will increasingly work alongside engineers to streamline repetitive work and make it easier to explore design ideas without replacing the creativity and decision-making humans bring to the process.

Advice for the next generation of engineers

With many years of experience under his belt, George offers advice to young engineers just starting in their careers. Technical skills remain critical, but he stresses that “teamwork, collaboration, and finding a mentor” were things that he learned later in life that proved to be most valuable.

George also encourages accepting challenges from generations younger than you and having an open mind. For example, he shares an anecdote about his manager’s kids comparing engineering graphics to consumer gaming system graphics, which led to his company improving graphics for their software.

That willingness to challenge the status quo will help shape the tools and the industry for years to come.
