Inside MIT’s Artificial Intelligence for Senior Executives program

May 20, 2025

In this episode of Applied Imperative, guest Cheyenne Ng sits down with Dale Goulding to unpack his recent experience at MIT’s Artificial Intelligence for Senior Executives program.

Dale shares his biggest takeaways from the first week of the course, offering fresh perspectives on the future of work and the critical role humans must continue to play in the responsible deployment of AI.

Key takeaways: realism and agency

When you enter a prompt into an AI program and get a seemingly insightful response, it can feel like magic. However, it is essential to approach these outputs with realism.

“There’s nothing truly magical yet,” Dale said.

This grounded perspective was one of his main takeaways from the program. While AI can feel intelligent on the surface, understanding how it works reveals a different story. Most generative AI is driven by statistics, and it is trained by data to predict what comes next in a sequence of words.

This technical understanding not only added realism to Dale’s view of AI but also reinforced the importance of human agency in its development and use.

Despite the hype, AI is far from being ready to take on critical tasks independently. Humans must remain in the loop, guiding, overseeing, and shaping how AI is used.

How will AI impact my career?

One of the common fears around AI is that it will replace human jobs, but what if we are asking the wrong question?

Rather than focusing on replacement, Dale encourages us to think about how AI might enhance our daily lives and workflows. He rephrases a powerful insight from an MIT professor:

“We’re all complaining that we have no time to do anything. We’re rushing around trying to squeeze in some food, take the kids to school, and get to work. Maybe, just maybe, AI will give us a little bit of sanity back,” Dale said.

Instead of pushing us out, AI could free us up by automating repetitive tasks, helping us work smarter, and making our lives easier. AI might be the most transformative tool humanity has ever created because of its ability to augment our lives.

However, this future depends on how we choose to use AI. As Dale emphasizes, humans will be at the heart of AI deployment to steer its direction and ensure it augments us, not replaces us.
