Challenge

A key challenge AeroTEC faced was the thermal management of electric motors in an aviation environment.

You wouldn’t normally think that, from an electric motor standpoint, you have such big heating and cooling issues. But in an aviation environment, you do because you’re putting out an extreme amount of power, which has to be dissipated in a couple of different ways.

Solutions

Integrating simulation tools to solve complex aerospace design challenges

To tackle the complexities of aerospace design such as thermal management, AeroTEC searched for new software that would allow it to avoid inefficiencies, delays, and higher costs. “As we move forward and we’re trying to integrate these newer technologies into an aerospace environment, the problems are going to get far more integrated,” Leighton said. “So, we need tools that are tightly integrated as well.” The Siemens Xcelerator Suite was AeroTEC’s top choice because this software allows the company to “account for all the physics” involved in simulations, Leighton said. This idea was seen in practice when AeroTEC used Amesim and STAR-CCM+ to create a comprehensive system model that accounts for all thermal effects. This method not only resolved immediate issues but also informed the development of a key integrated heat exchanger, ensuring system reliability and efficiency.

Results

Faster designs with integrated simulation tools

This new approach enables AeroTEC to meet customer demands more effectively by delivering technically sound solutions on time and within budget. The ability to rapidly iterate, simulate, and make data-driven decisions sets AeroTEC apart in a competitive industry.

A key partner in AeroTEC’s journey has been Applied CAx, whose support has been invaluable in helping AeroTEC maximize the potential of its tools. “They’re able to answer questions very quickly and give us advice on how to use the tools more efficiently,” Leighton said. “That’s been crucial for us in terms of our long-term ability to use the tools in a competitive way.” This level of support ensures that when AeroTEC encounters a problem, it has a “phone a friend” option where an Applied CAx expert can provide quick, actionable advice, which helps the company overcome challenges and keep projects on track, Leighton said.
