Teamcenter and NX Case Study – Nuclear Company – U.S.

July 22, 2025

Customer background and project summary

Our customer is a U.S. based nuclear company that came to Applied CAx after two failed implementations of Teamcenter by other partners. They needed help replacing their failed Teamcenter instance with a clean, scalable deployment, fixing misaligned schema, stabilizing NX model performance, and migrating and aligning Solidworks an NX environments. Applied CAx was able to build a new Teamcenter instance from the ground up, translate schema to align data types, remove Rapid Start limitations, perform full site migration to cleanly separate legacy data from new system architecture, and correct COTS data behavior by removing constraints from prior template lock-ins.

Summary

Challenge:

  • Current Teamcenter instance non-viable due to poor schema structure and unstable NX configuration
  • Current system not aligned for growth – did not meet BOM and configuration needs
  • Model performance and assembly structure issues with NX environment due to instability

Solution:

  • New Teamcenter
  • Stabilize NX
  • Migrate and align SolidWorks and NX
  • Expert services from Applied CAx

Impact:

  • Recovered a failed PLM deployment and replaced it with a future-ready system
  • Significantly improved performance, usability, and configurability of Teamcenter
  • Delivered advanced EBOM enablement, validated by Siemens as a technical leader
  • Resolved long-standing CAD data quality issues across SolidWorks and NX workflows
  • Positioned the company for scalable, clean digital thread development

Project objectives

After two failed attempts to implement Teamcenter by other partners, our U.S. based nuclear customer came to us needing a completely new and modernized system that could position them for rapid growth. They needed help fixing schema that was misaligned, including BOM and configuration needs. In addition to Teamcenter, this company wanted to improve NX performance and align NX and SolidWorks environments. By doing these things they set themselves up for more efficiency, collaboration and scalability.

Highlights:

  • Replace failed Teamcenter instance with a clean, scalable deployment
  • Fix schema misalignment and enable long-term growth (including BOM and configuration needs)
  • Stabilize NX model performance and correct assembly structure issues
  • Migrate and align SolidWorks and NX environments

Project activity highlights

First, we worked with our client to understand their goals and growth needs. We started by rebuilding their Teamcenter instance from the ground up and performed schema translation to align data types, remove Rapid Start limitations, and support advanced capabilities. We eliminated all dependencies on Siemens Rapid Start template and enabled full schema control to unlock previously blocked Teamcenter functionality. A full site migration to cleanly separate legacy data from new system architecture was also carried out.

To help better suit our clients’ goals we also helped with NX performance and large assembly optimization by working with Siemens to implement best practices like correcting wavelinks and identifying circular references. This reduced their model load time significantly.

For their EBOM and MBOM implementation, we held an onsite workshop to align on the latest techniques and were able to deliver an operational BOM in under a month.

To help company-wide alignment we also oversaw a CAD translation project for SolidWorks to NX migration. Data was migrated into the new Teamcenter environment.

Highlights

  • Built a new Teamcenter instance from the ground up
  • Participated in Siemens’ onsite EBOM workshop to align on the latest techniques
  • Delivered a working EBOM implementation in under a month
  • Configured the foundation for EBOM/MBOM alignment with room for internal expansion
  • Eliminated all dependencies on Siemens Rapid Start template.
  • Enabled full schema control and unlocked previously blocked Teamcenter functionality
  • Transformed and translated legacy data to conform to new best-practice schema structure
  • Identified circular references, improper wavelinks, and backward/sideways model links
  • CAD model open time reduced from 4 hours to 5 minutes through data cleansing and NX best practices
  • Managed CAD translation project for SolidWorks-to-NX migration
  • Migrated data into the new Teamcenter environment

Impact

Our client’s workflows were streamlined under their new Teamcenter environment allowing for faster iteration and more rapid growth. They are now positioned to expand without worrying that their software will hold them back. They are able to save time with CAD fixes and data quality improvements. This new system allows them to uphold best practices, ensuring maximum efficiency and encouraging more innovation.

Highlights

  • Recovered a failed PLM deployment and replaced it with a future-ready system
  • Significantly improved performance, usability, and configurability of Teamcenter
  • Delivered advanced EBOM enablement, validated by Siemens as a technical leader
  • Resolved long-standing CAD data quality issues across SolidWorks and NX workflows
  •  CAD model open time reduced from 4 hours to 5 minutes through data cleansing and NX best practices
  • Positioned the company for scalable, clean digital thread development
